In Britain, a historic event occurred: a member of the royal family entered into same-sex marriage. The heirs to the throne did not come to the wedding of the cousin of Queen Lord Ivar Mountbetten and his lover James Coyle, but the joint portrait of the newlyweds will soon take its place in Buckingham Palace.
For the first time in history, a same-sex wedding took place in a large royal family - the queen's cousin, the youngest son of the third Marquis of Milford Haven, 55-year-old Lord Ivar Mountbatten got married, writes Gazeta.ru. His chosen one was 55-year-old James Coyle. The wedding took place two years after Lord Mountbatten came off.
The path to the new family happiness of the Lord turned out to be thorny. Ivar Mountbetten divorced his wife Penelope Thompson back in 2011 year - they lived together 16 years, they had three children in a marriage. He met his future spouse three years ago in the Swiss ski resort of Verbier.
Until this year, they hid their relationship from their relatives and decided to confess only recently.
Lord Ivor and his new love, James Coyle, exchanged rings and vows in the chapel of the rural estate of Mountbetten in Devon. The ceremony was attended by 60 guests, closest friends and relatives, among whom were the daughters of Mountbetten and his former wife Penelope, who led him to the altar.
The parents of the Lord, the Earl and Countess of Wessex could not attend the ceremony. The decision on the wedding was made relatively recently, so Prince Edward and his wife Sophie could not postpone their plans.
“Their schedules are scheduled for months in advance, and they could not move plans. But they adore James, ”dispels Ivar to the suspicion that the earl and countess could be against the wedding.
The ceremony was modestly played by the gospel choir and flute in a private chapel in the estate of Bridwell Park near the village of Uffkulm in Devon: dressed in velvet jackets, James and Ivar exchanged vows. By the way, in this estate, Lord and Lady Mountbettten lived and raised their children. The celebration continued in the greenhouse, in the valley among the grazing deer. Guests were treated to sea fish, numerous cheeses of noble varieties and Winston Churchill's favorite champagne.
The wedding was held unconventionally in every sense of the word: the newlyweds refused to slow dance and wedding cake.
The couple is planning to spend honeymoon in Greece or Croatia - Ivar and James decided to move it to the end of the year, so they have enough time to think.
Lord Ivar confessed his homosexuality only two years ago, but his ex-spouse knew about his attraction to men before the start of their life together. Over the 16 years of marriage, Ivar struggled with his uncertain sexuality and from childhood he knew that he was bisexual.
“Penny knew before we got married. I knew that I could feel sympathy in both directions, ”Ivar Mountbatten admitted.
Ivar confesses that his fate was better than he could have dared to wish. At such an important step as a new marriage, he pushed his daughter.
He met James Coyle in 2014 during a family vacation. Ivar and his family always skied at the prestigious Swiss Alpine resort of Verbier, where he met his new love.
“I suppose if we met ten years ago, we most likely would have lived in a civil marriage. But now that the formal marriage between a man and a man is legal, it seems we have made the right choice, ”says Lord Mountbatten.
“I already had a wedding, and I was very happy. But James is not, therefore this ceremony is a confirmation of my love for him, ”he adds.
Now in Buckingham Palace among the portraits of Lord Ivar with his ex-wife Penelope will be new images of Mountbetten, but already with the new spouse, James Coyle.
