What American Food Unpleasantly Surprised Me: Tourist Experience in New York

When we happened to be in New York, one of the most exciting and interesting things for me was a trip to a real American diner, the author of the channel writes. "Zinaid Mikhalna" on "Yandex.Zen".
We settled in a hotel in Manhattan, and the first point of our tourist plan was a trip to a diner nearby.
Diners are the kind of American cafes that you always see in TV shows and films about America. You know, with sofas facing each other and a standard set of burgers and fries. And the waitress goes around and pours coffee for everyone.
Well, it's great to come to a place like this and feel like you yourself are the hero of a movie from your childhood. And I had very serious expectations about real American burgers.
The disappointment was even more serious.
Who would have thought that a real American burger with real American fries would taste like toilet paper?
“Probably, the diner was out of luck,” I thought, parting with a fabulous sum even at the rate of 2014 for this disgusting.

The next day, we chose to go to an Israeli restaurant, which threatened to feed us sandwiches and soups.
My companion ordered a cheese sandwich, and I ordered a soup, in which I decided to add noodles.
When the order was brought to us, a laughable tantrum almost happened to me.
Let me explain why: a cheese sandwich looked something like this: a piece of bread, a piece of cheese, a piece of cheese, a piece of cheese, a piece of cheese and somewhere else 5 pieces of cheese, a piece of bread on top. A sort of overgrown sandwich for 12 bucks.
Perhaps I had too many illusions, but in my imagination, a sandwich is something where, in addition to bread and cheese, there is at least a leaf of lettuce, a circle of tomato or cucumber ... Subway spoiled me, of course.
The so-called soup also gave me a fit of gallows fun. Because, apart from the additionally ordered noodles, there was nothing in this soup. Roughly speaking, it was just a weak broth “without nobody”. It's scary to think what would have happened if I hadn't ordered additional noodles that fit in one tablespoon. By the way, the cost of the broth was 8 bucks.
The next desperate attempt to eat anything normal was a trip to Chinatown - to a Chinese restaurant. There, my companion fished out a long black hair from his noodle soup (also, by the way, completely tasteless, which is at least strange for the Chinese).
We liked American food less and less, even if it was Israeli American food or Chinese American food.
“Okay,” I said, “let's go to the Italian area and have some Italian food. So what what, but pasta is impossible to spoil! "
“Don't underestimate me,” New York told me.

On the fourth day, I got used to buying fruits (already pre-cut, infinitely fresh and of high quality) and sushi, which were immediately prepared by a Japanese boy, at the local supermarket. Sushi, surprisingly, was very much even nothing, but here let's remember that sushi is, in principle, a fairly bland food by default and you don't expect much from it.
We had only five days in New York, and, to our great regret, it was not until the fifth day that we found the Essen buffet, offering a variety of food. And in this buffet I came across Korean beef (bulgogi), and now it was finally delicious! Everything else continued to be frankly so-so.
So our under-gastro tour ended with terrible disappointments.
Much later, an acquaintance of a young man from a fairly wealthy family revealed to me the secret that in the USA it is best to go to expensive French restaurants. And then there is something food will be really really nothing. Unfortunately, this statement has not yet been verified through personal experience.
PS: But I have never tasted such delicious coffee as in the American Starbucks in any other Starbucks in the world.
