About the duty of every American to be a jury

In addition to inalienable rights and freedoms, every American also has responsibilities. ?? Today I will tell you a little about one of them - the duty to be a jury (juror ['dʒʊrər]).
So, if you:
American older 18 years
- registered and living at the same address for more than a year,
- you can read, write, speak and understand what is said in English,
- have not been convicted of a serious crime,
- fit for mental and physical condition,
- do not belong to the ranks of the army, police, fire service,
then you may well be "lucky" to be a jury in court.
✔ As in the Green Card lottery, the "winners" are chosen by the computer.
✔ Lists used - the list of voters in the elections in the district and the list of driver's licenses issued in it.
✔ A potential juror receives a questionnaire on the basis of which it will be determined whether the person is suitable for this important role.
✔ It is possible to refuse this duty only for a serious reason; otherwise, you will be fined (if you ignored the notice or did not appear).
You can legally refuse the role of a juror if:
- you are over 70,
- have already played this role in the last 2 years (the computer just "loves" you),
- are a member of the rescue and ambulance team.
✔ For each day of the trial, the court will pay you $ 40, plus the road to the court (for each mile) and parking (if paid). Payment for lost working time is at the discretion of the employer.
In general, if you think about it, being a jury is a very serious matter, because the life and fate of a person unknown to you can depend on your vote.
