About what kind of care animals receive there and how you can take a dog or cat into a family - says the author of the blog "Uninvented stories about animals" on Yandex Zen.
We invite you on an “excursion” to one of the oldest shelters in the United States - the Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA and compare it with one of the Russian shelters “Zood”.
The shelter has existed since 1971, and since 1990 they have been rescuing animals that were in the queue for euthanasia in other shelters.
Animals from the Arizona shelter are given to new owners only for a fee. The amount is floating, for each animal its own, depending on age, breed, temperament. We looked through the profiles of several large dogs - this is about $ 285-300 each. Small ones are more expensive - about $ 500. Seals are cheaper - $ 50-120. Animals from Zoodom are always given away free of charge.
Dogs and cats in the shelter are spayed (neutered), vaccinated, microchipped, behaviorally and medically assessed, flea / tick free.
If you take a dog at an Arizona shelter, you must bring the whole family to the shelter to get to know it, including pets - dogs, if any.

As in Russia? At the shelter, we interview potential owners about the composition of the family, the presence of children, and other pets, but there are no strict requirements for meeting the whole family in the shelter.
At a shelter in Arizona, you will be asked to tell you if you are financially capable of properly keeping your pet. Is your home suitable for a particular pet? Do you plan to put in the effort and train your pet. Do you plan to keep your pet for many years.
What about refunds? Both the shelters and their own are returned. The main reason for taking a pet to a shelter is the loss of a job and relocation.
According to the American animal rights activists ASPCA, cats with a chip return home 20 times more often than unchipped cats, dogs 2,5 times more often. I did not find such data in Russia, and in general we do not have much of a chip.
It is not worth talking about the euthanasia of healthy animals, it is unacceptable and this is not an option. Sterilization, chipping, shelters, fines, whatever, but not lulling to sleep.
