The tragic incident occurred on June 10 in the city of Hobart, Indiana. Father of three children, Eric Hummel shot in the head his 9-year-old daughter, when he explained to his sons why they should not play with weapons.
It is noted that Eric entered the room to the sons with a gun Glock and began to tell them that they should never take up arms. Initially the gun was discharged. Father showed how to pull the trigger. Then he loaded his weapon again and immediately forgot about it.
At the moment when Eric sent the muzzle of the gun and pulled the trigger, his daughter Olivia entered the room. The bullet fired hit the girl in the head. The injury was fatal. After the fatal shot, Eric called his wife and said that he had shot his daughter.
"I'm sorry. It was so stupid, ”he said.
When the police officers arrived at the scene, the father was kneeling next to the dead daughter and sobbed, his hands shook. The man said he thought the gun was empty.
Eric Hummel was taken into custody. He is accused of causing death by negligence and neglect of parental responsibilities.
Hobart police chief Richard Zormier told a news conference that this is “not just another random shot of a firearm.”
“I believe it was a series of horrific acts committed by the suspect on June 10th. His actions that day endanger the lives of all three children and ultimately take the life of Olivia, an innocent 9-year-old girl, he added. "His actions caused the death of Olivia and probably left emotional scars on the boys for life."
