Marriage is a source of happiness, but ... only if your income is less than 60 thousand dollars a year, scientists say.
Married couples with an annual income below the specified figure were less likely to suffer from depression than unmarried and unmarried Americans with the same wages, reports The Daily Mail. This conclusion was made by scientists from the University of Georgia.
Those who earned more did not feel better or happier when they got married. The authors of the study believe that combining incomes can have a positive impact on human well-being, but not in all cases.
Researchers surveyed over 3500 Americans between the ages of 24 and 89 years, given a number of sociological, psychological, mental, and physical factors. Respondents were divided into three groups: never married, married and newlyweds. Their responses were evaluated for symptoms of depression, which were not so strong as to be considered signs of illness, but sufficient to affect the well-being and health of the person.
“We looked at the relationship between marriage, income, and depression, and found that married couples who earn less than $ 60 a year experienced fewer anxiety symptoms,” said Associate Professor of Sociology Dr. Cale.
The expert stressed that combining income with a partner helps people with an unstable financial situation feel better. Those who feel financial confidence in the future and without outside help, marriage does not make happier.
