34-year-old Kristal Gonzales from California was arrested after leaving two children aged 9 for months and one year in a red-hot car while she went shopping at Walmart in Ontario.
Law enforcement officers called the store’s security guard, who noticed that a group of people had gathered around the woman’s white SUV, wrote Fox News.
According to police spokesman Melissa Ramirez, the two children in the car "were in distress due to high temperatures" - the air temperature on July 8, when the incident occurred, reached almost 38 degrees Celsius.
Ramirez said that at the time of the police arrival the car was locked and the air conditioner was turned off.
Gonzales told the police that she was the mother of the children, explaining that on arrival at the store both children were sleeping and she did not want to wake them up, so she decided to leave them in the car.
The woman was in the store for about half an hour, and then returned to the car.
Ramirez clarified that doctors evaluated the condition of the children at the scene of the incident and decided not to send them to the hospital.
After the arrest, the women were handed over to local child protection services.
Gonzalez, who is facing a charge of endangering the lives and health of children, has already been released from prison, making a bail of 100 000 dollars. Now the woman is awaiting trial.
