American Allison Opfer learned about her pregnancy only during labor pains. According to the information portal Fox News, the patient arrived at the hospital with complaints of kidney stones.
A resident of Portage County, Ohio, suddenly felt a sharp pain in her stomach, writes Lenta.ru. Opfer called an ambulance, and the doctor who came to her suggested that she had kidney stones. 22-year-old American was taken to hospital and sent for ultrasound. They did not find any stones there, but they did find out that she was at a late stage of pregnancy, and that labor had already begun.
Her blood pressure rose sharply for Opfer, and doctors told her that she had preeclampsia, an attack in which the pressure rises so high that it threatens the life of the mother and child. “They told me that if I called the ambulance later, I would have died,” the American confessed. She was referred for emergency cesarean section.
Half an hour later a boy named Oliver was born.
Oppfer did not know about pregnancy: she had an irregular menstrual cycle before, and she explained her weight gain by an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle. Once an American even used a pregnancy test, but he showed a negative result.
Dr. Kayrin Dunston (Kyrin Dunston) added that cases like the Opfer story are not uncommon. “It all depends on the structure of the bones of the body: the pelvis and chest can be of such a shape that the uterus can grow in size and remain invisible,” she explained.
