In a car accident, a tablet was the cause of the death of a three-year-old girl from Spain, who was in a child car seat and wearing all safety rules. This incident has raised concerns among parents and experts around the world - how safe is it to use such devices in moving vehicles?
The tragedy took place on Monday, in Vilanova de Arousa, a town in northwestern Spain, writes Air force. The girl died when her mom's car crashed into a school bus.
In this case, 26-year-old mother of the girl and one of the student bus passengers received minor injuries.
Local media reported that the dead child was fastened in the child seat, secured by the ISOFIX system, but the child was fatally injured by a tablet that hit the girl in the face at the time of the accident.
Although the cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed, the police said that it was the tablet that apparently caused serious head injuries that were fatal.
“This tragic accident strikes fear into all parents who allow their child to use a tablet or smartphone as a toy while traveling,” says Pete Williams, RAC's road safety expert.
“We haven’t heard of any such incidents before, but it’s important to understand that at high speed, in the event of an accident, any solid, loose object inside the vehicle can become a lethal weapon,” he adds.
Parents usually use tablets and other gadgets to occupy their children while traveling in the car.
“There is equipment that allows such devices to be attached to the backrests of the front seats. Parents can use it to reduce risks from loose objects, ”explains Edmund King, President of the Automobile Association. “While we're not sure if there have been other similar incidents, it looks like this incident is a tragic accident.”
