In the United States developed a contraceptive for men, whose research has shown that the drug is effective and safe.
The study involved 83 people aged 18 to 50 years, all of them taking the drug led to a significant decrease in testosterone levels, as well as other hormones responsible for the production of sperm in the body of a man, reports USA Today.
Like the contraceptive pill for women, an experimental contraceptive called dimethanolone undecanoate (DMAU) reduces the level of hormones, it needs to be taken once a day.
The study is based on surveys of men who stated that they would prefer a pill to gels or injections, which are currently used as a contraceptive for men.
Despite the success of the first study, scientists are in no hurry to draw final conclusions, because the group of experimental was too small, and to confirm the results, it is necessary to conduct research among couples.
The development of this drug for men was very slow, as there was a risk of liver and kidney damage, but DMAU contains undecanoate, a long-chain fatty acid that significantly reduces the level of threat to the kidneys and liver.
At the same time, the levels of the hormones tested during the intake of the drug have decreased to an indicator at which, according to physicians, conception cannot occur.
Among the side effects of the drug are weight gain and lowering HDL cholesterol (high density lipoproteins). However, according to the researchers, these effects were insignificant.
According to surveys in different countries of the world, from 60% to 80% of men said that they would use other reversible types of male contraception, except for condoms, if such existed.
