The mother and father left two children aged 10 and 11 unattended in completely nightmarish conditions - the woman left for Florida, and the man did not care about the fate of the offspring, knowing that they were alone at home.
30-year-old Nicole Skiortino and her husband Vincent Likardello were charged on four counts of endangering the safety and health of children, writes The Daily Mail.
The police arrived at the 7 house in March after they were informed that two children were left alone in an empty house without adults. Arriving at the house, the authorities found a complete mess there, pizza boxes lying around, fast food packaging, clothes scattered around the rooms, and a box of medicines freely available. The temperature inside the house in Scranton was 58 Fahrenheit (14 Celsius), and the 11-year-old boy was wearing a winter coat indoors.
Authorities asked a 10-year-old girl to call her mother by FaceTime, and she said at first that she was already on the road and would soon return home. But in the end, she admitted to the police that she was in Florida, and that the 4 March flight was canceled due to weather conditions. The officers found that the dates did not agree, and the children lived alone at least 3 of the day. The father said that the children should have stayed with his ex-wife, who lived 5 miles away. He also said that his car had broken down, but he was checking out the children, throwing food at them and communicating with them on the phone.
The children told the police that they got up on their own, got to the bus stop, had breakfast at school, and at home heated up ready meals in the microwave. The boy admitted that his mother specifically taught him to cook in the microwave and explained how to maintain the temperature in the heater. It later turned out that one of the children this year missed 16 school days, and the other 26. Now children live with family friends.
In response to the accusations, the mother of the children said that she “didn’t think it was really that bad” and “didn’t suspect it was illegal.” Both parents were arrested on $ 10 bail. Preliminary hearings in their case will take place on March 000.
