A recent meta-analysis found a decrease in sperm count in 40 years in men living in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
This conclusion was reached by researchers from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and Icahn School of Medicine in new york writing NBC Miami.
Scientists reviewed 185 studies from 1973 to 2011, and noted 52-percent reduction in sperm concentration and 59-percent reduction in total sperm count.
“For couples who are trying to get pregnant, this is a very serious problem, and it is difficult psychologically, but by and large it is also a serious public health problem,” said Dr. Shanna Swan, author of the study and professor of environmental medicine at Icahn School of Medicine.
It is noted that the reasons for this decline are not given in the document, the causal relationship is also unclear.
Dr. Joseph Alukal, urologist and director of male reproductive health in NYU Langone HealthIt recommends that men, in order to increase sperm count, adhere to a healthy diet, exercise, do not smoke and get enough sleep.
