Insects, as well as people, are more or less interesting for sexual partners. And it is associated with pheromones. For example, butterflies always fly in pairs - beautiful and ugly, as this increases their chance of reproduction.
The question of why this happens interested Astrid Grute, a researcher from the University of Amsterdam. She watched the unattractive female butterflies of the species Helicoverpa armigera. Astrid was interested in what they could attract the male if the external signs were not very pretty.
During field studies, Grute noticed that some females did not attract males at all, but nevertheless still somehow reproduce. For more detailed observation, Astrid moved the experiments to the lab.
When growing butterflies for many generations, beautiful individuals were separated from the ugly. Then they were grouped in pairs in different combinations and the males were run to them. Further, they observed the behavior of butterflies, carefully noting who chooses whom and how.
If two attractive individuals were present in a pair, then success with the males was ensured. A pair of two unattractive butterflies - the males were not interested at all.
If a pair of one attractive female and one - not very, then the chances are not very nice began to increase. The mating of unattractive females took place in the 17% meeting with the male.
It turns out that an ugly butterfly, in terms of pheromones in a company with an attractive butterfly, was much more likely to find love.
In addition, Astrid Groot believes that such a tandem is beneficial for attractive butterflies. On the one hand, their chance of breeding is reduced by 17%. But at the same time, if they spent time with beautiful girlfriends, then the probability would fall by as much as 50%. That is, a beautiful and ugly girlfriend is logical.
