Coronavirus 2019-nCoV can last on used gauze masks for up to a week, an expert group from Hong Kong University and the American National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said.
They investigated the "survival" of the virus on various surfaces, according to the Hong Kong edition of the South China Morning Post. Earlier, an expert report on research results was published in the specialized journal The Lancet.
The studies were conducted in laboratory conditions at room temperature on various surfaces.
Here is what else experts have confirmed or clarified:
- on printed and tissue paper the virus lasted less than 3 hours;
- on treated wood and fabric - a standard cotton laboratory jacket - it disappeared on day 2;
- on glass and banknotes, the virus was still visible on day 2, but completely disappeared only on day 4;
- on stainless steel and plastic, he was present from 4 to 7 days.
Experts also found that conventional household disinfectants, including bleach, were effective in killing the virus. However, hand washing and disinfection remain one of the easiest and most reliable ways to avoid infection.

“If you want to protect yourself, just follow hygiene, wash your hands as often as possible and try not to touch your face, eyes, mouth or nose without first disinfecting your hands,” the report says.
