Starting in September this year, the menu of students from seven schools in Los Angeles will include a vegetarian lunch box - Vegan Lunch. Writes about it Vegnews.
Children can enjoy a specially selected vegetarian menu, in particular - burgers, hot dogs, various sandwiches.
The initiative was proposed by Steve Zimmer, President of the Board of the United School District of Los Angeles (LAUSD). He was supported by a number of animal rights activists and organizations, including actress Pamela Anderson, youth activist Lila Copeland and a group of veterinarians from the Committee for Responsible Medicine.
The Vegan Lunch program will be launched from September 5 in the schools of North Hollywood, Banning, Fairfax, Huntington, Roosevelt, Crenshaw and Silmar and will last until November 17. Pupils will appreciate the taste of vegetarian hamburgers, hot dogs, tamales beans, teriyaki sandwiches and tortilla chili chips.
“We work with suppliers to not only ensure that food and vegetarians meet food standards,” said LAUSD Food Services Director Joseph K. Vaughan, “but we also strive to make them tasty and appealing. We want to spark children's interest in vegetarian food and show that such food is delicious and nutritious too. "
During the trial period, students will vote for their favorite menu options and provide feedback on improvements. LAUSD will use this information to implement similar programs in other schools.
