Nicole and Ben Weum could not wait until the birth begins. The estimated date of midwives has come and gone. Finally, the doctor called the woman to Santa Rosa hospital to induce contractions, writes NPR.
Together with the doctors, the expectant mother tried several methods of provoking contractions, and finally, on the third day, labor began, and the contractions acquired the required pace. In the midst of contractions, the couple decided to listen to music so that the woman in labor could relax. They turned on something from Pavarotti when the power went out in the hospital. Acrid smoke began to draw into the room outside. “You could breathe it in and even see it,” Nicole says.
It turned out that the buildings around the hospital were on fire and an urgent evacuation was needed. 210 patients from two buildings were urgently transferred to other medical facilities. All of this happened when Nicole had just been given an epidural. The woman could not move, much less walk. They decided to stop childbirth with medication. “That was the worst news,” Nicole admits. The woman lay on a gurney in the corridor, feeling paralyzed, and awaited evacuation. When it was her turn, several women in labor were put in the car at once, and there was no room for her husband. He later took a bus to the clinic.
Through 12 hours of unsuccessful fights, Nicole made a cesarean section - a healthy boy was born, who was named Adrian. The new father said that friends for fun offered to give the baby a middle name like Flame or Smoke. But since Nicole is a fan of the Los Angeles baseball team, the son was named Adrian Dodger Weum.
