Four-year-old Sienna Rasool from the UK had to fight for her life in intensive care after she was wearing new shoes. The girl tried on shoes on bare feet in the store. The next day, she was in serious condition in the hospital.
Doctors say the baby caught bacteria from the shoe, which entered the body through a wound in the leg and caused deadly sepsis. In order for the bacteria to provoke the development of such a dangerous disease, it is necessary that they pass through the skin barrier - doctors suggest that the girl had a small wound on her leg, similar to a combed mosquito bite, which became the gateway for infection, writes New York Post.
The girl spent five days on IVs in the hospital. Next to her is her mother, 26-year-old Jody Thomas. According to her, she was shocked to learn that all this could have happened because of the new shoes. Usually the girl wore socks, but the summer was hot and the child was in sandals. The shoes that she tried on were also measured by other children - so Sienna caught the infection.
When, a day after shopping, Mom heard Sienna scream in pain, she took her daughter to the pediatrician. In the clinic, the doctor diagnosed the infection and marked the place of its spread with a pen. By the next day, the disease attacked the entire leg of the child, causing severe fever, cramps and trembling. Then the mother took Sienna directly to the hospital. They found sepsis and immediately laid the girl on the operating table, having wound drainage and prescribed antibiotics.
Now the girl was sent home, but she is still under medical supervision. The mother warns other parents to be attentive and to wear children’s socks when trying on shoes.
“You don't know whose feet were in these shoes before,” the woman says. “Sienna was really sick, the infection was climbing up her leg and spreading all over her body. I'm so glad I was able to quickly get her to the hospital. ”
Dr. Ron Daniels, executive director of the UK Sepsis Trust, said: "This chilling case shows that sepsis affects people indiscriminately and can affect anyone at any time." According to him, most likely, the girl had a wound, abrasion or bite on the skin of her leg.
“When signs of infection appear, it is imperative to seek medical attention as soon as possible and ask doctors if it could be sepsis,” he added. “This awareness will help save thousands of lives every year.”
