A native of Ryazan, Alexander Merkulov in his youth earned a living as a racketeer, the website kp.ru reports. Merkulov got a fake passport with the name Chudinin and the nickname Sasha Chudnoy.
In the 2000s, the group tried to take over the St. Petersburg oil terminal. Merkulov took part in organizing the assassination attempt on its owner, Sergei Vasiliev. The businessman's jeep was blocked on the road and fired upon. As a result, one of the guards died on the spot, Vasilyev himself and two others in the car were wounded. Kumarin was arrested, and Merkulov fled to Yalta.
There he stopped, assigning himself a new surname Mazurenko. Acquaintance with Ovsienko happened at her concert, and soon a whirlwind romance began. His past was revealed when the man was identified and placed in a pre-trial detention center by the Crimean police. After 10 months, Merkulov was sent to Matrosskaya Tishina.
