Company Netflix introduced the online platform Hermes through which subtitles and translations are tested. The company is now looking for translators around the world through this platform. The main requirement for candidates is knowledge of the English language, the ability to grasp phraseological nuances, the ability to identify stylistic and linguistic errors.
The test that the candidates have to pass consists of thousands of questions from which random combinations are collected, thus eliminating the possibility that the same set of questions will fall into two candidates. Platform itself Hermes is unique and designed to test candidates' English language skills, test their ability to translate dialectisms, slang words and phraseological units into another language. The company reports that after the launch of the testing platform, more than a thousand candidates have already participated in the testing.
The questionnaire indicated that applicants need to understand that creating subtitles is not only the ability to translate textual information, but also the ability to correctly calculate timing, as well as the ability to clearly perceive a foreign language by ear. The platform provides the translator with the opportunity to choose his favorite genre with which he wants to work. The cost of one minute of subtitles in December last year was $ 10.
According to the staff of the online cinema, in the world there is actually no single base of qualified translators, there are only 100-150 professional translators of subtitles working with the Dutch language. In other language groups, the situation is even worse.
Company now Netflix supports translations into 20 languages of the world, including languages such as Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Russian, Polish, and intends to expand the language map in the future. Even 5 years ago, the online platform supported only English, Spanish and Portuguese.
