The muse he nearly killed: what happened between Quentin Tarantino and Uma Thurman

“Was it or wasn’t it?” - This question has been worrying the public ever since Tarantino called Uma Thurman his muse (that is, almost three decades ago). And while Tarantino claims that there was nothing, fans and the press are sure of the opposite. Quentin and Uma’s relationship actually developed and why they were constantly suspected of the novel, LADY.TUT.BY.
Their story began in the early 1990s, when Tarantino decided to shoot his legendary Pulp Fiction. Before Uma, other actresses (in particular, Meg Ryan and Michelle Pfeiffer) were considered for the role of Mia Wallace. But, having met Thurman, the director no longer saw anyone in the image of Mia but her.
To approve Uma for one of the key roles, Tarantino had to sweat pretty. Firstly, according to rumors, Thurman was not eager to star in the film (why - no one knows). Secondly, the actress was "rejected" by the now infamous producer Harvey Weinstein: he insisted on more famous candidates. However, Quentin defended his opinion.
By the way, one of the most memorable movie episodes - a barefoot twist - also happened only thanks to Tarantino’s talent to convince. Thurman was categorically against this take: the owner of an impressive (42nd) foot size, she was terribly shy to shoot without shoes. But Quentin, a noble female ankle lover, was able to convince his muse.
Perhaps already then, on the set between Quentin and Uma, a spark flashed. But they did not show their minds and presented themselves to the public as colleagues. And after a couple of years, Thurman stopped all speculation about the affair with Tarantino: she married actor Ethan Hawke.
Quentin was just preparing for the shooting of the film “Kill Bill” (the main role in it was given without hesitation to Uma) when Thurman became pregnant. The director reacted to the situation with understanding and ... just moved the shoot. After all, he wrote this script under his muse and was not going to replace it with another actress.
After waiting for the return of Uma from the decree, Tarantino immediately began filming. And here in the creative tandem there was a discord: because of the director's idea, the actress was in a car accident. According to Uma (she admitted to this, by the way, only after many years), Quentin insisted that she ride behind the wheel of a convertible herself, without resorting to the help of a stuntman.
“Quentin walked into my trailer, he didn't want to hear my no, like any director,” the actress recalls. “He was furious because we had already wasted a lot of time. I was scared. He said: "I promise the car is fine, there is a straight road."
But it turned out that the road is not so straight. Uma received several serious fractures.
By the way, when the story of the accident surfaced in the media, Tarantino hastened to make excuses: they say that it was not so.
“I was not furious, I did not go into the trailer of Uma and did not shout at her to get behind the wheel of this car,” he said and admitted that this incident had a great impact on their relationship with Uma. - It lasted about two to three years. But we never believed that the trust between us was lost. It took several years to return to what was. ”

During these very few years, Thurman managed to part with her husband. The divorce was painful: it was caused by Hawke’s constant betrayal. However, Quentin Uma did not go for support - on the contrary, she plunged headlong into a new novel. This time, the financier Arpad Busson became the chosen one.
And what about Tarantino, you ask? Realizing that his muse was once again busy, he declared: he was not going to acquire a life partner until 60. “So far I have made just such a choice and will go along the same road, since it is my time to make films.”
Why exactly up to 60, the director did not explain. However, he did not have to wait so long: when Quentin was a little over 50, Thurman broke up with her French boyfriend with a scandal and fell into the arms of an old friend.
The fact that this friendship finally grew into something more, the press spoke after the couple’s joint release in the framework of the Cannes Film Festival in 2014. Tarantino and Thurman constantly looked at each other, smiled at each other, and even furtively held hands - everything indicated that they were together. And then rumors spread that the stars had come together.
It is interesting that none of them confirmed this fact (as, incidentally, the novel). On the contrary, Tarantino assured that there was nothing between him and Uma. But journalists and fans sacredly believed that the creator and his muse had found their happiness.
Be that as it may, a couple of years later the illusion of happiness was destroyed. Uma told the public about the accident (and also stated that Tarantino did not protect her from Harvey Weinstein's harassment), which significantly lowered the director in the eyes of the public. And Quentin suddenly announced an engagement with an Israeli singer 20 years younger than himself - Daniela Peak.
According to rumors, they met and first met in the distant 2009 - just when Thurman was in a relationship with Busson.
It seems that this is where the personal story of Quentin and Uma really ended: the director became an exemplary family man and even a father (last February the Tarantino couple had a son). But their creative tandem, it seems, is still in business: recently the director mentioned that he was writing the script for the third part of "Kill Bill".
