Parents of the boy, 34-year-old father Peter S. and 30-year-old mother of Sandrin V. own their own health food store in Antwerp. They stopped feeding Lukas (that was the name of the child) with dairy products, since the baby, they said, had cramps from milk.
A few days before his death, the child had an exacerbation, but he was not taken to the doctor. Only the next day, the boy was brought to a homeopath, and he, seeing the condition of the child, immediately sent them to the hospital. Virga Jesse Ziekenhuis in the city of Hasselt. But the doctors failed to save him - the boy was brought to the hospital already dead. A neatly folded prayer sheet was found in the diaper. An autopsy revealed that the baby's stomach was completely empty.
The prosecutor, after studying the case file, insists on imprisonment for both parents for 18 months, because they brought the child to death from dehydration and malnutrition. He believes that the fault is irresponsible attitude to the child and his food, inappropriate to the age group.
The lawyer for the parents, Karina van Meirvönn, stated at the trial that the parents did not seek medical help before, as they were convinced that the child simply had problems with lactose intolerance. Since they have long been involved in healthy nutrition, they decided to feed Lukas with the same food that they themselves consume. Food products included rice milk, buckwheat milk, oatmeal milk, semolina milk and quinoa milk. All these products were fresh and of high quality, since they are an assortment of their store.
According to the pediatrician of the University Hospital in Brussels, all of these products, just like ordinary shop milk, are completely unsuitable for newborns. They do not contain even half of the vitamins and minerals necessary for the growing organism and cannot be used as the basis for baby food at all.
Among the charges of the prosecutor is also the fact that in case of acute complication of the child, the parents took him to a homeopath to the other end of the city, and did not immediately go to the nearest emergency hospital. Despite the fact that the baby was already 7 months, after birth he was never brought for a medical examination, did not open a medical card and medical history, and the parents themselves invented an allergy to lactose and gluten nutrition.
The final court decision on this case will be taken 14 June.
