Mexican Yovita Mendez, living in California, has set a goal for herself - to obtain the citizenship of the United States, and was able to achieve it. The main problem was not in immigration law, but in the fact that a woman can neither read nor write, nor does she speak English, reports NBC.
Yovita Mendez has lived in the United States for more than two decades. All this time she tried to apply for citizenship, but ignorance of the state language and almost complete illiteracy did not allow a woman to achieve her goal. To obtain citizenship, you must pass a naturalization test, in which the subject is asked ten random questions. It is required to answer correctly at least six of them. This requires a certain set of knowledge. A woman who is unable to read has practically no chance of it. And yet, Yovita was able to.
A local resident helped, who shared secrets unknown to Jovita. It turned out that a resident of the United States over 50 years old who has lived in the country for more than 20 years can be interviewed in their native language. The neighbor read Mendes' questions aloud and the correct answers to them, and also installed an application on her phone that allows her to listen to the questions again. As a result, Jovita was able to learn all hundred questions by ear, and passed the test the second time. The woman, crying, told reporters how she did not believe in herself. “My children were asked to do this for themselves, for them and for the future. I am now a US citizen. I wanted more - and I achieved it, ”Mendes admitted to reporters.
