In matters of children's health, there can be no compromise - so doctors around the world are tirelessly looking for more and more progressive methods of preventing and treating diseases in children. The American Academy of Pediatrics annually reviews its recommendations in order to provide the young generation with maximum attention, care and benefits, protecting them from diseases. The other day, the Academy experts announced new recommendations for vaccination of newborns.
Changes that relate to vaccinations against viral hepatitis B. The main goal of innovations is to reduce the transmission of the virus from mother to baby. At this point in the United States, more than a thousand cases of infection by the perinatal route are recorded annually (this means that the virus was received by a child in the second half of pregnancy or in the first weeks after birth).
This reason prompted pediatricians to make adjustments to the schedule for hepatitis B vaccinations in newborns.
What has changed?
- Babies whose moms have a positive antigen of the virus (called HBsAg) will be vaccinated during the first 12 hours after birth. Both the vaccine and the immunoglobulin will be administered to the child.
- If the mother's tests are normal, the vaccination will be performed on the first day of the child's life, provided that he weighs more than 2 kg.
- When the situation with the status of the mother is inaccurate, the child will be vaccinated as if the mother is the carrier of the virus.
Pediatricians are reminded that a single vaccine is enough to prevent a newborn from being infected in the indicated way, but only with vaccination in the first 12-24 hours of a baby's life.
