Personal experience: the activities of a charitable foundation in the United States
'24.07.2017'
In the spring, my husband and I went to the town of Birmingham (no, this is not in England, this is in our state) for an event called Corks and forks (“Plugs and Plugs”). What is this strange phrase? - you might think. And here everything is simple! This is an annual wine tasting charity dinner (wine tasting).
The husband's company sponsored the evening and sold tickets to employees at a symbolic price of $ 50 per person (charity!).
At such evenings my husband and I did not go, so we decided to go.
The event was "civilized", with a dress code - everyone came beautiful and elegant (and women - even in heels!).
We had a tasty dinner there, had a variety of different wines, had a lot of beautiful speeches.
Speech was about the activities of the charity fund Winning futures (Winning the future), the essence of which is that it helps high school students from low-income families to go to college.
In the last academic year, a “mentor” is attached to the participating high school student (on a voluntary basis!) - a person who must meet with him / her for 1 hour once a week and help with advice, example, motivation, conversation, etc. (but not with money and not with homework, as you might think), so that he achieves his goals and develops as a person.
At the end of a year of such motivating meetings, the foundation chooses a “winning high school student” to whom it financially helps pay for college.
My husband immediately got the idea of becoming one of these “mentors”; says he has something to share - both knowledge and experience, and 1 hour a week can be carved out for a good cause.
