A US border patrol supervisor agent, whom the authorities call a serial killer, was arrested on Saturday for killing four people after a woman, who almost became his fifth victim, was able to contact the police.
35-year-old Juan David Ortiz confessed to killing four people between 3 and 15 in September on charges brought in a trial of Webb County, Texas, writes CNN. He was also accused of unlawfully holding a person under aggravating circumstances with the help of deadly weapons, said district judge Isidro Alanis.
During the last two weeks, the bodies of all four victims were discovered, Sheriff's spokesman Eduardo Chapa told CNN. He said that investigators do not exclude the possibility of a greater number of victims. The victims were originally described as three women and one man, but the sheriff's office later said that the victim, identified as a man, was a transgender woman.
All the victims were shot in the head. They all worked as prostitutes.
"He specialized in certain types of victims," Alanis said, adding that "the suspect was hunting his victims."
The prosecutor called Ortiz a serial killer. It is not yet known whether he has a lawyer.
Andrew Meehan, a spokesman for the US Customs and Border Guard, said in a statement to CNN that the agency is fully cooperating with investigators.
"While it is CBP's policy not to comment on the details of the current investigation, criminal actions by our employees are unacceptable and never will be," he said in a statement. “Out of respect for the family and friends of the victims, we ask that due diligence be given to the investigation so that all the facts are revealed and the case can get the ending it deserves.”
All the above circumstances opened on Friday after the woman barely escaped from Ortiz. The woman was in a truck with a man named "David", they started talking about one of the prostitutes who went missing a week ago. Then the man pulled out a pistol and aimed it at her, and when she tried to run away, he grabbed her shirt so that the victim could not get out of the car. She pulled out of her shirt and ran to a nearby gas station, where she ran into a serviceman.
According to the judge, the victim was able to provide a detailed description of Ortiz, including his tattoos. Authorities discovered Ortiz at a gas station in Laredo, about 160 miles (260 km) south-west of San Antonio. He escaped from the scene in the direction of the Ramada Inn, where he was found hiding in a pickup truck.
Ortiz read his rights, then he verbally confessed to killing four people in the last two weeks, the statement said. Two of the four murders occurred in the coming hours after the woman managed to escape, but before the police tracked him down.
Ortiz 10 served for years as a US border patrol agent. The judge said that he is also a veteran of the US Navy. The authorities conveyed condolences to the families of the four victims.
