American scientists published in a professional journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences a study that demonstrates in detail what will happen to the country's ecology and the health of US citizens, if all Americans switch to vegan style of nutrition. This tells Science Mag.
The peculiarity of vegans lifestyle is that they completely exclude products of animal origin from their menu, as well as change their surroundings - they do not use wool, leather, animal fur in clothes, accessories, home and everyday life.
According to scientists, greenhouse gas pollution associated with animal breeding is now 49% of the total hazardous agricultural emissions. However, if all residents of the United States once refuse to consume animal products, the total emissions from agriculture will be reduced by only 28%. Why is that? The fact is that in case of refusal to breed livestock land, which are now given for this task, will become arable - the amount of plant debris will increase dramatically, which means it will be burned. This will further pollute the atmosphere.
In addition, there will be less manure, and more chemical fertilizers will be needed to grow crops. Therefore, if you count the total emissions in the country (not only related to agriculture), then, by refusing to use animal products, it can be reduced by only 2,6%.
The experts also clarify that the diet of exclusively plant food does not give the human body enough vitamins A and B 12, as well as calcium, which will result in a problem of a national scale.
