Today, Friday the thirteenth, I want to talk to you about American superstitions.
Americans have superstitions similar to ours, such as breaking a mirror - by seven years of misfortune - but they also have their own, unique ones. Examples:
Rabbit's foot: brings good luck and protects from evil spirits, like garlic and silver from vampires?. Therefore, the paw is a fairly common talisman in modern America, especially provincial America.
According to one theory, superstition came from the British Celtic tribes, on the other - from people of Africa, on the third - from Native American Indians.
Whish bone - a chicken or turkey bone in the shape of the Latin letter Y. A kind of game with the bone, when two people hold it by the opposite ends and pull it at each other, is still a very popular fun, especially among children, usually held on Thanksgiving.
According to legend, the Romans in the first century competed, who would be the first to grab this bone from the table, which, as they believed, brought good luck. Bone, of course, broke in the fight, and the owner of more than half was considered lucky.
666 number fear: In July, 2003, the US Administration renamed highway 666 number / highway 666 to 491 road / Route 491. Devilish number 666 led many local residents to refuse to use this road.
The most common superstitions:
- 13% are afraid of black cats,
- 11% believe in the negative power of a broken mirror,
- 9% do not like 13 number.
In many US hotels there is no thirteenth room, and in some high-rise buildings there is no 13 floor: the 12 floor follows 14.
Do you believe in superstition? I just can not wean myself spitting and knocking on wood. Although in principle I do not believe it, it is already at the level of habit.
