The American died saving his daughter from a sinking car in icy water

24-year-old Anthony Burgess did not know how to swim, but when his three-year-old daughter accidentally took off her handbrake and found herself in the middle of a deep pond, her father rushed into the icy water to save the child.
The girl survived and was taken to a hospital in critical condition, later her condition stabilized. Her father died in hospital a few hours after the incident, writes Indy star.
"Terrible situation. This dad did the best he could, ”says Indianapolis fire officer Jet Quillen.
What happened? Sunday afternoon Burgess got out of the car in the residential complex Castletonto chat with a friend. Soon after he asked his daughter to return to the car, the car suddenly drove off. Burgess and his friend ran behind the car and jumped into the water, although both did not know how to swim. The father pulled the girl out of the car, as soon as she plunged into the water, his friend climbed ashore shocked by overcooling.
A random passerby, seeing what was happening, jumped into the water from the opposite bank, grabbed the little girl and swam with her to the land. When he returned for Burgess, it was too late.
“He just disappeared. People were running from everywhere, shouting. His head disappeared under the water, ”recalls a witness, a 16-year-old boy, watching from a window.
The man was dragged out, but that same evening he died in the hospital. The car was found by divers the next day at a distance of 50 feet (15 meters) from the coast and 25 feet (almost 8 meters) under water. The water temperature was about 35 degrees Fahrenheit (1,6 Celsius).
